Brain gym exercises are simple activities which enhance cognitive function, and these can improve communication ability, attention, memory and academic performance in learners. Research shows that brain gym practices are equally beneficial for both children and adults. The session will introduce the ideas of brain gym along with some background information and research, how the concept works in language learning and some suggestions of implementing them in classroom.

Vocabulary Retention Practices and Their Effects on Vocabulary Learning Habits of Students

Arev Babahan2:00-2:20Acquiring new words might be a challenge for students especially in lower tracks as they might not know the correct strategies to learn vocabulary. After these strategies are introduced, the issue of vocabulary retention arises because students tend to overlook the fact that retention is closely related to frequent revision. Teachers try to expose learners to the target vocabulary as frequently as possible in their lessons. In this regard, studies suggest that spaced practice as opposed to massed practice is vital for vocabulary retention. Moreover, spaced retrieval could help learners form healthy vocabulary learning habits as such habits are essential for lower-level students who will most probably take those habits to higher levels with them. In this presentation, I will first introduce the significance of spacing, some vocabulary retrieval exercises that I do in my classes, and their effects on the vocabulary learning habits of my students.

Script Exploitation for Critical Thinking and Deeper Understanding of the Content for Track 1 Level

Elif Kaymaz2:30-2:50Exploiting a listening script enables students to develop a deeper understanding of the covered material. Exploitation exercises are generally done in pairs or groups after a listening. Learners divide the script into their main ideas, analyze them and rewrite or retell the content in their own words with a rhetorical pattern. Thanks to such exercises, learners manage to tackle the difficult content of listening tracks. These exercises mainly consist of a written production in the form of paraphrased sentences with the addition of appropriate rhetorical patterns. The presenter will give participants examples of listening exploitation exercises and the following feedback sessions from her lessons and discuss what went well in her class.
