PD Workshop
Abstract
Strategic reading helps second language learners to learn new information, acquire new language skills, and become expert readers. Learners also need to know when and how to use different strategies as well as monitor and evaluate their comprehension, which refers to metacognitive awareness as reading is a dynamic and active process. The focus of this session is to help our learners to read more effectively by extracting meaning and monitoring their comprehension. In this session, we will look into some studies on how skilled and less skilled learners approach a text and what kind of reading strategies they use for effective reading comprehension. In the second part of the session comprehension monitoring strategies will be suggested for learners to fix and regulate their comprehension and become more self-aware readers rather than depending on the teacher. The session will end with a hands-on practice where participants will use selected strategies to design some reading tasks and share their ideas with the other participants.
